Floating Wetlands, water is Life

Fytogreen’s floating wetlands are highly adaptable systems designed for any water body in need of treatment. These modules provide a rich, fertile environment for plants, with a surface area fully capable of supporting plant growth. This leads to extensive root development, which enhances the system’s effectiveness beyond other available solutions.

As the roots extend through the fibrous structure of the wetlands, they create a vast activated surface area that supports bio-remediation. This process uses microorganisms to eliminate pollutants. UV-sensitive microbes and bacteria attach to the roots and tiny hairs of the plants, secreting sticky extracellular proteins and forming biofilms within the wetland’s fibrous structure. These biofilms capture and break down organic matter and nutrients in stormwater, including total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Provides Safe Habitat

Water is Life - Fytogreen Floating Wetlands

Wetlands bird species are drawn to the edges and surrounds of floating wetlands, to rest and observe for predators, whilst nesting within niches of the densely vegetated interior plantings.

A range of groundcovers, tussocks, forbs and shrubs allow for foliage stratification. This is an ideal combination of growth forms and diversity to create requisite niches to accommodate most wetland fauna and to regulate temperature and humidity.

Supports Aquatic Species

Vegetated floating wetlands offer protection as well as food sources for fauna, including aquatic species such as fish and amphibians, with root systems of plants extending into the water column, penetrating to varying depths pending species selections. This services multiple temperature and light zones, creating diverse biofilms capable of processing water and feeding a range of micro-fauna including juvenile fish and invertebrates such as shrimp.

Hence, a floating wetland creates a nucleus for spawning and refugia for newly hatched aquatic species, across a diverse range of trophic levels.

Reduced Evaporation

Reduced evaporation through by shading of the water body, thereby reducing solar inputs into water, with the resultant reduction of light, reducing algal growth and moderating water temperatures.

Fully Expandable System

Fytogreen developed the modular system that remains above the waterline when walked on, meaning maintenance is easy. With independent engineering certification, the system is expandable up to greater than 1,000m2 as a vegetated pontoon.

Applications

Floating wetlands can be utilized in a variety of water environments, including:

  • Urban water bodies: Ponds, lakes, and reservoirs in cities to improve water quality and aesthetics.

  • Stormwater management: Retention and detention basins to treat runoff and reduce pollutants.

  • Agricultural areas: Irrigation ponds and drainage channels to manage nutrient loads and improve water quality.

  • Industrial sites: Wastewater treatment ponds to enhance the removal of contaminants.

  • Natural habitats: Wetlands and marshes to support biodiversity and habitat restoration.

  • Recreational areas: Golf course ponds and park lakes to maintain clean and clear water.
Moderate Water Flow

Active floating gardens can be used to moderate water flow, slowing currents, thereby controlling silt deposition in targeted locations, whilst simultaneously establishing habitat, processing water and seeding banks of failing wetlands.

Floating gardens offer support to municipal and government installations on a range of scales, inclusive of newly establishing, remnant and long-term installations

Beautification & Landscaping Applications

Floating gardens can be utilised as aesthetic treatments for ponds, natural swimming pools and amenity waterways, with a range of native and exotic species.

what sets fytogreen's floating wetlands apart is our surface area is capable of
100% VEGETATION GROWTH

supporting MORE plant growth & MORE root growth, thus providing greater benefits than other systems currently available.

Fytogreens floating wetlands are floating modules planted with wetland species to add beauty, interest, offer significant water quality management benefits/capacity and provide a diverse habitat to all kinds of water bodies.

Developed by horticulturists, so 100% of the module surface is capable of plant growth, Fytogreen have meet the growing demand for small scale floating wetlands with positive buoyancy.   The floating wetland modules are light, easy to install and plant, expandable to over 1,000m2 and supported by independent engineering.  Fytogreens floating wetland modules are 100% Australian made and manufactured at Fytogreen head office on the Mornington Peninsula, all components are long life and warrantable and the tether/anchor systems is developed as either an in-lake or bank anchor.

"A Safe, Strong and Sustainable Systems "

Fytogreen developed the modular system that remains above the waterline when walked on, meaning maintenance is easy. With independent engineering certification, the system is expandable up to greater than 1,000m2 as a vegetated pontoon.

Safe, strong and sustainable, our modules can be used as temporary or permanent measure with an expected lifespan of 15 years or more.

We design each system with indigenous wetland species that deliver on your project goals and our maintenance service ensure your long-term needs are met (if required).

Fytogreen’s floating module system is hydroponic, thereby plants receive all nutrition directly from the water column;  this ensures plants direct all their potential to absorb nutrients, including pollutants and heavy metals, directly from the water they are growing in, rather than organics held within their rooting substrate.

This is a highly efficient means of utilising vegetation to condition a site, aiding in rehabilitation and remediation towards healthier conditions and habitats.  Our floating wetlands also provide native wildlife refuge - Floating Islands provide a safe nesting site away from introduced predators ie. foxes or cats.

This is a versatile technology capable of being integrated into urban and rural settings, covering industrial, commercial and residential applications, on small and large scales.

  " Water is Life "

“Water is life” may sound passé, yet it is a most profound fact. Life follows water, whether inside or outside our bodies; in deserts; rainforests; salt or freshwater; in soil or in trees or on rocks on land or in the sky.

Floating Wetlands are fascinating and beautiful technologies, capable of offering extensive environmental services that may be applied across a wide range of scenarios. They can be applied as aesthetic additions, a means of injecting all the benefits of verdant plantings into water bodies, or functional and targeted planting solutions to commercial or public realm wetlands requiring assistance to deal with poor water quality.  Additionally, Floating Wetlands may become part of revegetation projects or ecological works, establishing healthy waterways, creating habitats as permanent or temporary support for vegetation establishment or fauna such as waterfowl, turtles, fish and all manner of aquatic life.                 READ MORE.....
