Project Overview

Hotham House is a bold and sustainable transformation of a 1930s Inter-War bungalow in Canberra, designed by the award-winning team at Austin Maynard Architects. The renovation preserves the original structure while introducing two modern pavilions, creating  home that is playful, functional, and deeply connected to nature.

Fytogreen’s Role

Fytogreen was engaged to supply and install indoor planter boxes for the residence, contributing to the project's biophilic design goals. Our work focused on enhancing the interior environment with lush, low-maintenance greenery that complements the architectural vision.

  • Planter Box Area: 4.7 m²
  • Number of Plants: 37
  • Installation Date: September 2023

The planter boxes were strategically placed to soften interior lines and create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The selected plant species were chosen for their resilience in indoor conditions and their ability to thrive in low-light areas.

Design Integration

Fytogreen’s indoor greenery supports the architect’s philosophy of “weaving, not rewriting,” where new elements are integrated with care and respect for the original home. The planter boxes add texture, movement, and life to the interiors, reinforcing the connection to nature and enhancing the sensory experience of the space.

Sustainability & Wellbeing

Our planter systems are designed with sustainability in mind, using specialized engineered media, strategic species selection, and timed irrigation supply. The indoor greenery contributes to improved air quality, reduced stress, and a calming atmosphere—key benefits of biophilic design in residential architecture.

Fytogreen brings the garden indoors at Hotham House, enhancing residential architecture with a custom indoor planter boxe that seamlessly integrate nature into everyday living.
