Completed in August 2024, the development at 161 Eastern Road, South Melbourne is a bold example of modern architecture meeting sustainable design. Designed by Kavellaris Urban Design (KUD) and built by Kapitol Group, this 10-level mixed-use building features luxury residences, commercial spaces, and a sculptural façade that turns heads.

Fytogreen Australia supplied and installed a total of 143 custom aluminium planter boxes across balcony levels 1–9, along with 2 GRC tree planters at ground level. These planters are seamlessly integrated into the building’s architecture, enhancing both its visual appeal and environmental performance.

The system spans 66 square meters of planted area and supports 9 verified plant species, including Senecio radicansLiriope muscari, and Acacia cognata 'Mini Cog'. A total of 1,058 plants were installed, selected for their resilience, texture, and ability to thrive in Melbourne’s urban climate.

More than just decorative, the planter boxes contribute to thermal regulation, biodiversity, and urban greening—key goals for sustainable development in high-density areas. Fytogreen’s green infrastructure ensures the system performs effectively year-round, enhancing both the building’s aesthetic and its environmental footprint.

With its layered greenery and bold design, 161 Eastern Road sets a new benchmark for biophilic architecture in Melbourne. It’s a living example of how thoughtful landscaping can elevate urban spaces—making them more livable, sustainable, and inspiring.
