The Boronggook Drysdale Library was opened in May 2023 and features a unique circular design, planted with sloping green roofs.

The roof garden is the first of its kind in the Greater Geelong region, and covers an area of 544 square metres. With a 40 degree outward slope that forms a funnel, Fytogreen used a geoweb cellular confinement system to support the soil and plants.

Home to more than 4,770 plants from 18 different native species, the green roof creates a natural habitat for birds, bees, and butterflies.   It roof garden also extends to the facade of the library, facing the public parkland.

Environmentally Sustainable Design

The green roof forms part of the library’s environmental sustainable design, which also includes resource-efficient systems including the collection of water in a large underground water tank with self-sustaining roof habitat.  It was developed in collaboration with the City of Greater Geelong who has committed to powering the project with 100% renewable energy.

Part of the city of Geelong’s UNESCO design city accreditation program, which aims to foster innovation and creativity, the library also serves as a gathering place for the community, offering a range of services and programs.

Drysdale library is a remarkable example of living architecture that integrates nature, culture, and technology in a harmonious and inspiring way.   It is a testament to the vision and collaboration of the architects; Antarctica Architects and Architecture Associates, the city of Geelong, the Geelong Regional Library Corporation, the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, and the local community.
