Perched above Melbourne Quarter Tower C2 at 695 Collins Street, Docklands, this 340m² extensive roof garden demonstrates the power of green infrastructure to support biodiversity in one of Melbourne's most densely developed precincts. Delivered by Fytogreen for Lendlease, the project transforms a previously unused rooftop into a thriving urban habitat, creating valuable green corridors and pollinator-friendly environments within the city skyline.

Designed in collaboration with OCULUS, Aspect Studios and Woods Bagot, the roof garden was established within a shallow 150mm substrate depth, showcasing how carefully engineered green roof systems can deliver significant environmental benefits while maintaining structural efficiency. The diverse planting palette was selected to withstand challenging rooftop conditions while providing year-round seasonal interest, habitat opportunities and ecological value.

The extensive green roof contributes to improved urban biodiversity by supporting birds, bees and beneficial insects, helping reconnect fragmented habitats across Melbourne's CBD. Beyond its ecological benefits, the landscape also assists with stormwater management, reduces the urban heat island effect and enhances the visual amenity of the building for occupants and neighbouring developments.

The project forms part of a broader greening strategy throughout the Melbourne Quarter precinct, including three lobby wicking reservoir planter boxes and two indoor FC FytoFelt green walls totalling 55m².

Together, these integrated systems bring nature closer to people while supporting healthier, more sustainable urban environments.

Melbourne Quarter Tower C2 is a strong example of how rooftop landscapes can contribute to resilient city design, proving that even lightweight extensive green roofs can create meaningful environmental outcomes while enhancing the liveability and biodiversity of Melbourne's evolving urban landscape.
